IHM

INVENTORY OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

Providing a safe and healthy environment is a prerequisite for a compliance with maritime operation.

B

y law, all ships visiting EU ports will have to have an approved IHM (Inventory of Hazardous Material) by December 2020. IHM is a list that identifies the hazardous materials that are contained in ship’s structure or equipment, their location and approximate quantities. IHM is a tool to minimize risks to the employee health and the environment. It is mandatory for all ships larger than 500 tonnes to keep an IHM, which is the key requirement as per Hong Kong Convention and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EUSRR).

Our team of highly trained certified Hazmat experts are positioned worldwide and provide surveys for all 3 parts of the IHM and locate and quantify the hazardous materials on vessels around the world. Whether they are newly built, currently trading, or due to be recycled, our IHM development is in accordance with the Guidelines MEPC269(68) of IMO and Best Practice Guidance of EMSA developed in light of EU Regulation No 1257/2013. Our Hazmat experts use certified and approved laboratories located worldwide that provide rapid and accurate results.

IHM Part I consists mainly of a detailed account of the hazardous materials contained in fixed structures and or equipment. According to IMO MEPC.269(68), the list of materials is included in Table A and B of the HKC. Certain examples of the hazardous materials found on a ship may be, Asbestos in the boilers, PCB’s (Polychlorinated Biphenyl), Ozone Depleting Substances, Anti-fouling mechanisms, PBB’s (Polybrominated Biphenyl) and etc.

IHM Part II corresponds to Table C and D in which materials identified are operationally generated wastes like; Oily sludges, Bilge Water, Ballast Water, Raw/Treated Sewage, Garbage, Incinerator Ash, Fuel tank residues and etc.

IHM Part III gives insight into all regular consumable goods (such as electronic and interior equipment) that possibly contain hazardous materials (Table D).
